A breakthrough came in 1992, when Andrew Benson and A. Nonomura discovered how to optimize photosynthetic carbon fixation, publishing their results in The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 89:9794-9798, XXIVth in the Nobel Series.
